SCAM ALERT Paying for Help that is Free

Often, enterprising companies contact us with an offer to file a document or claim form for us for a fee, when we can file the same document or claim ourselves for free!  While this is not technically a SCAM, it is a business practice that takes advantage of our lack of knowledge of public programs and services that are available.

Recently Riverside County residents who are blind, disabled or over the age of 62 years have received mail solicitations offering to file a “Renter Assistance Claim Form” for a fee (generally about $30.00).  A worksheet requesting personal information such as household income, amount of rent paid during 1999, and citizenship information is required.  AARP volunteers are available at senior centers across Riverside County to assist with providing the forms and/or assisting people in the completion of the forms.

Don’t pay unnecessary fees – call your local senior center for FREE assistance.
